After the Storm: 2013 Property Taxes

After the Storm: 2013 Property Taxes

Did you know that your property taxes in New Jersey for 2013 are based on the value of your property as of October 1, 2012. That means that your property taxes will not reflect the fact that you may have suffered severe storm damage! If you or your clients, friends, or family suffered a significant loss in property value as a result of Sandy or the recent Nor-easters, you might qualify for this exception, but you MUST NOTIFY THE TAX ASSESSOR by JANUARY 10, 2013. If you fail to do so, the assessor is not obligated to consider it when assessing the property. The court cases on this subject make it clear that the notice must be given to the assessor, and that the awareness of the damage or depreciation by other municipal officials does not satisfy the statute’s requirement. If I can be of any assistance to you, your clients, friends, or family, please feel free to call or e-mail me. For more information, please visit my website at http://www.henbestlawgroup.com.
